All of this takes several hours and a lot of energy, so we had fruit, cookies, water and Joan's homemade fudge to help us along!

Our Educational Foundation keynote speaker was Patience Tusingwire, a post-graduate student from Uganda who is studying International Transaction and Comparative Law at the University of San Francisco. Patience recounted her difficulties growing up the oldest of three orphaned children and told how, against all odds, she acquired a college education through persistence and hard work.
She spent several years working to improve the legal rights of orphans and women in Uganda, and was awarded an AAUW Educational Foundation fellowship which enabled her to further her studies in San Francisco. Julianne Cartwright Traylor, Associate Director of International Programs at the USF School of Law, accompanied Patience for the presentation.
November 20, 2008 “When you cease to make a contribution, you begin to die.” Eleanor Roosevelt. This quote, which exemplifies the life of Eleanor Roosevelt, was the inspiration for our Eleanor Roosevelt Birthday Celebration.
The program featured readings from a variety of Roosevelt’s writings by branch member Mildred Owen, including some from My Day, a syndicated newspaper column published from 1935 to 1962. Members also shared stories of how the work of Eleanor Roosevelt touched their lives.
This celebration was the perfect occasion to launch our new Janice Dole Dutton Scholarship. Jan was a vibrant member of the Branch for nearly 50 years, and a Life Member of AAUW. She was Branch President several times and held numerous other Board positions. Jan was instrumental in making jazz concerts possible in Pacifica, starting in the Old Firehouse; she tirelessly hung art in the Community Center for years and spearheaded the candidates’ forum broadcast on Channel 26.
The scholarship will be awarded annually to a female graduating senior at Oceana High School who is a resident of Pacifica pursuing a degree in visual or theatre arts. You can donate by sending a check to our address and indicate Dutton Scholarship in the check Memo.
